A Classic Returns!
As part of our Legacy Series of classic Bruz Beers, we are pleased to re-introduce Bruz Whak! Whak is a strong amber ale inspired by the famous Pauwel Kwak beer in Belgium. The name comes from the whack of intense aromas and flavors you get when you taste it, but the name’s similarity to Kwak was no accident.
Whak is a harmonious beer with a pronounced aroma reminiscent of Bananas Foster and flavors of banana, caramel, toffee, and oranges. Its finish is long and luxurious with notes of caramel and fruit. Its 7.8% alcohol is smooth and well-hidden.
Who was Pauwel Kwak?
In 1791, the Bosteels Brewery was founded in Buggenhout, Belgium. The Bosteels family has brewed beer in that location for more than 200 years, and it is one of Belgium’s most prestigious breweries, producing Tripel Karmaliet, DeuS Brut de Flandres, and Pauwel Kwak.
Pauwel Kwak was the owner of the De Hoorn Inn in Dendermonde. In those days, stage coaches would stop at De Hoorn and other inns, where passengers were served food and refreshments. Unfortunately, the coachmen who drove the coaches could not come inside for a beer because they had to stay with the coach to protect the mail, the horses and the passengers’ belongings. Feeling for the coachmen, Pauwel Kwak invented a special glass that could be placed into a holder on the side of the coach, allowing the coachmen to enjoy a beer like everyone else.
Kwak Beer Returns
In honor of Pauwel Kwak, Ivo Bosteels re-introduced Pauwel Kwak beer in the 1980s and it caught on. To this day, the beer is served in a special beer glass that simulates the one mounted on the coaches of old. It is one of Belgium’s best-loved beers.
Available for a Limited Time only.
As part of our Legacy Series, Whak is made in small batches that are only brewed every few years. While supplies last, it is available at both Bruz Taprooms – 67th and Pecos in Midtown and Bruz Off Fax at Colfax and York. Come in for a taste of this classic brew!
